The Global Plantation Series

This pandemic summer I participated in a series of curated conversations hosted by the ICF (International Curators Forum) focusing on the historical meanings and contemporary legacies of the plantation, across the globe. The first conversation featured artist Shiraz Bayjoo, whose work examines the legacies of slavery and indentureship in Mauritius.

The second conversation between Shiraz, me and artist Jasmine Togo-Brisby considered the slave-diaspora in Australia, and the still understudied history of the enslavement of Australian South Sea Islanders, and their subsequent deportation.

The third conversation brought Shiraz and me into conversation with Sancintya Mohini Simpson, whose work explores the passage of Indian indentured labourers to South Africa from the 1800s to the early 1900s.

A final live Q and A between all three artists will be held in early September.

All talks and details for live events are available on the ICF website.
